About the Program

The program “Building a Society Free from Gender-Based Violence: Tools to Make Visible the Realities of Immigrant Women in Domestic Service in Spain” funded by the Government Delegation Against Gender-Based Violence of the Ministry of Equality and implemented by the NGO America, Spain, Solidarity and Cooperation -AESCO-, has carried out a series of actions to develop materials and educational tools aimed at raising awareness, sensitizing, and preventing gender-based violence among immigrant women working in domestic and care services.

Along these lines, actions have been taken that involved different stakeholders in the participatory development of tools that can prevent and respond to situations of violence that this group may experience in the workplace. Through this project, practical and manageable educational materials have been developed so that immigrant women in this sector can learn about ways to detect and respond to gender-based violence. Similarly, educational awareness tools have been created regarding the different forms of violence they may experience, promoting values of equality, diversity, respect, and recognition of the value of care work.

The activities included meetings with organizations in the 5 cities where the program was implemented: Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Huelva. Meetings were held with public institutions at local, provincial, regional, and national levels, as well as with third-sector organizations, in order to learn about their different work experiences and contributions that would help identify resources and services to prevent, respond to, and report any form of violence against domestic and care workers.

As a fundamental aspect in the design of the materials, immigrant women working in domestic and care services participated through workshops where they shared their experiences, the most common types of violence, as well as the information and resources they would like to have available as a group. In addition, academics, experts, and employers participated, offering their perspectives and positions on the issues faced by domestic and care workers.

This process has resulted in the materials presented below, which we hope will be useful for immigrant women working in domestic and care services.

CARD FOR DOMESTIC AND CARE WORKERS

In the workshops held with the program’s beneficiaries, the need arose for immediate and effective information to respond to gender-based violence. As a result, this informational card with USB memory functionality was designed for immigrant women working in domestic and care services, which are distributed in the different cities where the program was implemented. The card contains the main national communication channels for responding to gender-based violence, as well as two QR codes that provide access, on the one hand, to the AlertCops application that sends a geolocation signal to the police in case of danger and, on the other hand, provides access to information of interest for immigrant women domestic workers.

Resources for Workers

Here you will find information about organizations that may be of interest to domestic and care workers in the fight against gender-based violence, but also information related to the workplace. The program was implemented in 5 cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, and Huelva. In each city, a list of organizations of interest has been created, with a brief description of their objectives and the contact channels they offer. To facilitate your search, you can click on any of the cities and the institutions we recommend will be displayed.
